MAPU I && II

Mathematical methods for physics I and II 2011 (MAPU)

(53704, 8 credit points and 53705, 8 credit points)

o NOTE: MAPU has two exercise sessions weekly: check information about the excercise classes.
Register to the excercise groups you want through weboodi. The registration to the ex tempore groups (thurs, fri) closes on 6.9. at 24.00, and to the homework groups (mon, tues) on 8.9 at 24.00.

Note: english language groups are 2 (thurs 14-16) and 7 (fri 14-16) for ex tempore, 2 (mon 10-12) and 6 (tue 8-10) for homework.

o Lecturer: Kari Rummukainen, C 323 (office hours thurs 14.30-16)
o Lecture times: Monday 14-16, Tuesday 14-16 Physicum D101
o Exercise groups (remember to register through weboodi!!)
o Course exam dates:
To be announced later
o Grading: The course exam determines 2/3 of the grade, homework 1/3
o Teaching assistants: Anca Hienola (anca.hienola) [English], Niklas Hietala (niklas.hietala), Niko Koivunen (niko.koivunen), Mikko Lavinto (mikko.lavinto), Zhou Luxi (zhou.luxi) [English], Tommi Tenkanen (tommi.tenkanen), Tuomas Tenkanen (tuomas.tenkanen), Björn Udd (bjorn.udd) [Swedish]

o Homework

o Lecture notes (in Finnish)

o Course description: The course gives a compact mathematical toolbox necessary for quantitative understanding of the natural sciences. Instead of deep mathematical treatment, the focus is on developing computational routines, understanding practical applications and physical principles.

o Contents:
MAPU I: vectors, limits and derivatives, series, Taylor series, integrals of one variable, complex numbers
MAPU II: differential equations for one variable, vector differentials, line, surface and volume integrals, Gauss' and Stokes' laws, matrices, linear algebra

o Course material (notes, books)
